【運動員網誌】Ten years ago, I broke my first age group record in 200m Butterfly and I as a spectator at the 4 x 100m Freestyle relay, I gained source of inspiration from observing the races of Freestyle record holder, Fu Wing, Harbeth.
I followed his footsteps, he expressed frustration when I showed up to training late. I did not cherish the recovery treatment sessions. I neglected swimming down and did not have the enough fitness to swim through a multi-day races. But the most important part I learned from him was the responsibility when swimming in the relay.
My swimming might be driven by a painful memory, the haunting fear, or an unconscious belief. But I met teammates who are now my brothers for life. Coach Tim, who basically became my father. I developed a strong sense of belonging to the team. I was always trusted in the relay and it has been a great motivation and initiative.
Looking back at all these years, there are some promises I did not fulfill. In my seven years studying in St. Joseph’s College, I did not deliver an Inter-School overall championships; we did get three times championships in A-grade. I hit the rocks in 2009 East Asian Games 4 x 200m Freestyle relay and let my team down. Two days later, we put out the same team, same line-up; we fought back in 4 x 100m Freestyle relay and made to the podium with a Hong Kong record. There are hundreds of circumstances, values, and emotions. I think that will always motivate my life, it will always give me passion. This is a reflection on an emotional career and I know it is going to end soon.
Remember that one day on July 2006, I was selected as a member for the Doha Asian games by HKSFOC & HKASA. I have learned and grown in these ten years; I participated in three consecutive Asian Games and acquired eleven Hong Kong records. Life is a test and a trust, and the more I face, the more responsible I will be. Finally, I am going to represent Hong Kong to swim a very last 200m Butterfly in World Cup 2016 – Hong Kong, just like the first try in my swimming career.
It was a journey.
